The scientific publication is classified into different categories, but the basic structure of a scientific paper should be summarized as Introduction Methods Results And Discussion. However, there the format of the article varies for different type of articles and depending on journal publishing house. Authors submitting their work in the most appropriate format will be able to maximize their material and enhance the chances of manuscript acceptance.
Original Research Article
Report of new research findings usually prospective and supported by in-depth statistical data analysis. The conclusions should be supported by results. This report should be focused on original observations and unique features of the study and refer previously undescribed procedures. Original Paper should consist of an ABSTRACT apart from IMRAD.
Often, they are presented as pilot studies, where the feasibility of doing a larger project is studied; thus, you are examining a hypotheses and checking to see whether one can go farther with it (though reasons for not doing so may be logistical as well as scientific). Think of my own work on journal use, where we found some of the cells had no data in them, making it impossible to do any further work since no statistical analysis was possible.
A review summarizes complete analysis of recent developments on a specific field. Reviews may or may not introduce new information however; key points and emerging areas of the selected topic should be addressed. These are short, educative, informative papers often published in clinical journals. These papers provide recent diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The articles enhance the current knowledge.
Case reports are sort of lower echelon kind of paper, which is a description of single case with specific and or unique features. Authors may include previously unreported disease, imaging or diagnostic test, clinical conditions, treatment methods and complications of procedures in this paper, but it should be short and focused. These reports usually consist of background of the case (abstract), introduction, case study and discussion. In this case, figures and references may be limited.
These are integration of case report and literature review. But One should make sure that the paper is retrospective comparative assessment of diagnosis and treatment of several cases of similar conditions.
Papers intend to report or evaluation of new or improved equipment, procedures, critical evaluation of old techniques, equipment and or procedures. But these have not been reported earlier.
Editorial are the presentation of points-of-view or opinion relating to a journal. This is the editor's prerogative only. It deals not necessarily with scientific issues, though it can, but also with policy issues and with publication issues.
